3 Amazing Debut Novels

Writer's picture: CatNipCatNip

Hey everyone! I was looking around my bookshelves to see what I could write about when I noticed how a lot of the books I love are debut novels. I'm always open to trying new authors as long as they're book sounds like something I would enjoy. These books I'm going to list, I'm sure you've heard of and if you haven't then look at that! You have a new book to try! I'm going to be using summaries from the Goodreads website on one of the books because I haven't done a review on it yet. Enjoy!

Elantris by Brandon Sanderson

Elantris was once a beautiful and abundant city that was ruled by people who were revered as gods. They could create food from almost nothing and they were able to heal all wounds that were brought to them. The Elantrians were the gracious rulers of Arelon. That all changed when a mysterious and devastating curse overcame the city, turning all of the once gifted chosen to be the now powerless doomed.

Ten years after the curse struck the once godly city, a story that follows three individuals of three different nations commences in the city of Kai, the new capital of Arelon after Elantris's collapse. Prince Raoden was the prince of Kai and was loved by all the people. His problems only began, though, when the curse of Elantris claimed him and doomed him for all eternity to the dark city. Next up is Hrathen, a high priest of the empirical Fjordell empire. In hopes to convert Arelon to the religion of Fjordell and avoid a massacre of the people, Hrathen goes to the nation to convince the king to accept the rule of the large empire, or to die at their hands. He finds it challenging to convert those who used to live among the gods themselves.

Finally, there's Princess Sarene of the nation of Teod, one of the last remaining countries that have avoided Fjordell's rule, along with Arelon. She traveled all the way to Arelon to marry a man she never met but discovered that she was a widow before the ceremony even took place. Now she must devote her time to helping the people of Arelon against the formidable Fjordell empire.

How are these people connected and what will their role be in the future of Arelon? Will their choices make the world, including Elantris, better? Will they just make matters worse?

If you look at my previous article about this particular book, then you will know how much I enjoyed this book and the world it takes place in. It was beautiful and magical and Brandon Sanderson just elegantly introduced us to it. So, yes, this is top-notch for a normal book let alone a debut novel!

One of Us Is Lying by Karen McManus

This book is a play on the famous movie, The Breakfast Club. You have the classic character archetypes, the brain (Bronwyn), the criminal (Nate), the princess (Addy), the athlete (Cooper), and finally, the nutcase (Simon). Every single one of these teenagers is known for something. Bronwyn for her smarts, Cooper for his baseball, Addy for her beauty, and Nate for his astounding criminal record. Simon, on the other hand, is known for something quite unique. He somehow knows everyone in the school's deep, dark secrets. He puts his knowledge to use in his very popular gossip app that the whole school reads.

One day, all five of these students walk into detention and only four of them leave...

Who was the one who killed the nutcase?

In this murder mystery, you see the point of view of Bronwyn, Cooper, Nate, and Addy. Every single one of these high school students is hiding something. Something that seems as though they would do anything to keep it from getting out. Who killed Simon? What are they all hiding?

Karen McManus has three amazing mystery novels published (and another one on December 1st!) that I all own. I read this book and was just insanely invested in the story and the characters. I also have a HUGE crush on the character Nate so that may be another reason I love this book so much...

Humans and androids crowd the raucous streets of New Beijing. A deadly plague ravages the population. From space, a ruthless Lunar people watch, waiting to make their move. No one knows that Earth’s fate hinges on one girl. . . . Cinder, a gifted mechanic, is a cyborg.

She’s a second-class citizen with a mysterious past, reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister’s illness. But when her life becomes intertwined with the handsome Prince Kai’s, she suddenly finds herself at the center of an intergalactic struggle, and a forbidden attraction. Caught between duty and freedom, loyalty, and betrayal, she must uncover secrets about her past in order to protect her world’s future.

I'm sure most of you have heard of Marissa Meyer and her Lunar Chronicles series or her Renegades series. I mostly put this book on here because I was really surprised that this was her first book! And then she goes on to make Renegades which I just have no words for how much I loved THAT one!

I really love these books and if you haven't already, I definitely suggest these books. If you've read other books by these authors, then read the books that started their amazing careers! I really hope you enjoyed this and I hope you consider these books and their authors.

Until next time,

CatNip
