3 Amazing Older Books That Everyone Should Read

Writer's picture: CatNipCatNip

Hey fellow book nerds! In my book adventures, I've read my fair share of older books. There are certain books that take place in a time that I love to go to. It's calming to read a Jane Austen book and be transported back into her time period. I hope that by reading this list, you can see the value of reading books from a different time. All of these summaries I've included are from Goodreads because I have yet to review these books.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Since its immediate success in 1813, Pride and Prejudice has remained one of the most popular novels in the English language. Jane Austen called this brilliant work "her own darling child" and its vivacious heroine, Elizabeth Bennet, "as delightful a creature as ever appeared in print." The romantic clash between the opinionated Elizabeth and her proud beau, Mr. Darcy, is a splendid performance of civilized sparring. And Jane Austen's radiant wit sparkles as her characters dance a delicate quadrille of flirtation and intrigue, making this book the most superb comedy of manners of Regency England.

This was the first Jane Austen book I've read and I absolutely loved it. I'm not saying that it's like modern books, but it's still absolutely phenomenal! It took a minute to get used to the cultural behavior of people in that era, but after getting acclimated, I really enjoyed the story.

A Princess of Mars by John Carter

A Princess of Mars is the first of eleven thrilling novels that comprise Edgar Rice Burroughs' most exciting saga, known as The Martian Series. It's the beginning of an incredible odyssey in which John Carter, a gentleman from Virginia and a Civil War veteran, unexpectedly finds himself on to the red planet, scene of continuing combat among rival tribes. Captured by a band of six-limbed, green-skinned savage giants called Tharks, Carter soon is accorded all the honor of a chieftain after it's discovered that his muscles, accustomed to Earth's greater gravity, now give him a decided advantage in strength. And when his captors take as prisoner Dejah Thoris, the lovely human-looking princess of the city of Helium, Carter must call upon every ounce of strength, courage, and ingenuity to rescue her-before Dejah becomes the slave of the depraved Thark leader, Tal Hajus!

For an older sci-fi book, this one is absolutely excellent! Again, I had to get used to the writing style and culture of the time period, but after that, I enjoyed it! One thing I did have to get used to, was how women were viewed in that time. I feel that, as this book series continued, the way that women were viewed, grew with the times. Looking at the publishing date, and correlating it with the women's rights movement, it really makes sense.

A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L' Engle

Out of this wild night, a strange visitor comes to the Murry house and beckons Meg, her brother Charles Wallace, and their friend Calvin O'Keefe on a most dangerous and extraordinary adventure—one that will threaten their lives and our universe.

Confession Time! I've actually never read this book... but I swear that I have it on really good authority that it is really amazing! I do plan on reading it here soon so that I can understand what the hype is all about.
