Hello everyone! I've decided that because the Amulet graphic novels are such short easy-to-read books, I'll be doing a review for the series two books at a time. I'll be giving an overall summary of the two books with out giving any spoilers, as usual!
Summary
After her father's untimely death, Emily, along with her mother and brother, are forced to move to the country where her mother grew up. They move into the old, mysterious house that belonged to Emily's great grandfather, Silas Charon, a man known for being eccentric and somewhat of a hermit.
While cleaning up the old, creaky house, Emily and her brother, Navin, come across an amulet in Silas's library. Putting on the Amulet, Emily goes about the rest of her day. That night things go terrible and her mother is kidnapped by a strange creature and taken into an entirely new world. Emily and Navin fallow the creature but eventually they must flee from it in order to not get taken themselves. Now, stuck in this new world, the Amulet guides Emily to where she needs to be.
With the help of those loyal to her great grandfather, Emily makes her way through this mysterious new world that she must help protect. She doesn't know the full threat of what she's facing or how difficult it will be to save her mother, but her and Navin plan on facing it together and with the help of their new friends.

I have always LOVED the Amulet series. It was released when I was younger and that's around the time I started reading it. I hadn't fully grasped at the time that it was a series, and I was really disappointed when the story ended at the most inopportune time! I actually didn't come across the rest of the books till years later, and by that point, the eighth book had just been released. So, I just decided to spend A LOT of money and buy the rest of the books.... it was SO WORTH IT!
Despite the fact that I feel the first book moved a little fast for my taste, I realize that that's how most graphic novels are, and I've come to almost overlook it. The artwork is just so beautiful in these two books and the characters almost seem to come alive as you read it. This world that Kazu Kibuishi creates is such a thrilling one. While there are the obvious violence that ensues because of the evil Elven ruler, this place is somewhere that, since I was young, wanted to be at. It's full of amazing magic and adventure that seems so appealing!
This was the series that got me into reading graphic novels. I've struggled to find a graphic novel series that grips me as much as this one, though. If you haven't read any of these books already, then I suggest you pick the first book up and start reading it. All it takes is to read the first book, and you'll be hooked.
Age Rating
9+
These books have absolutely no sexual content or language. The only thing that parents should look for, is the violence. While it's surprisingly not too graphic, there are a few fighting scenes in these two books and one of the characters wants to kill his father. The characters are being hunted by the Elven king who is trying to kill them. Other than that though, this is a really appropriate book.
Just because this is more geared towards this age range, doesn't mean for ne second that teens and young adults wouldn't enjoy this book. The magic and adventure is, for me at least, pretty amazing, even for an older audience.
