Summary

Leading a double life while infiltrating the headquarters of her enemy (the heroic Renegades), was a lot harder and complicated than Nova Artino (a villain part of the group called the Anarchists) imagined. Not only does she have to make sure to keep her stories straight and make sure no one discovers she's anyone more than "Nova McLain", she's having to make sure she doesn't get too emotionally involved with the people meant to be her enemies. This means ignoring her feelings for Adrian Everheart, the son of her sworn enemy, Captain Chromium. It quickly becomes more of a challenge when her uncle tells her to get closer to Adrian in order to learn the Renegades' weaknesses.

Nova isn't the only one who's struggling with secrets and keeping her stories straight. Adrian has plenty secrets of his own. Along with saving the city of Gatlon as a member of the Renegades, he's also been trying to save it as the Sentinel. No one knows that he's the one that dons armor and lasers, so he can better protect the city he loves. Many people, including both of his dads, believe that the Sentinel is dangerous, and that's why Adrian has kept it a secret from everyone. Even the girl who occupies his thoughts most, Nova McLain.

Nova and Adrian both struggle with the concepts of justice and protecting the people, all the while they have the growing feeling that they have to deal with the mutual affection that's between them. Will Nova be able to stay loyal to the Anarchists while she's falling in love with a Renegade? Can Adrian better protect the city as a Renegade or as the Sentinel? Find out in this heroic and action-packed installment of The Renegades trilogy: Archenemies.

Opinion

Scale of 1-10:

10

This story was absolutely amazing! While it was slower moving, that doesn't mean one bit that it was boring. I love the intense feeling that Nova really started to feel in this second book. She really started to doubt where her loyalties lie. I loved being able to watch her and Adrian's story from both their points of view because it shows both of their doubts and reservations that they carry. Along with their romance, came the secrets that they were both carrying. It just added to the sheer tension that was mounting throughout this book!

Another thing that I feel is of note, is the absolutely adorable side characters like Oscar "Smokescreen" Silva and Ruby "Red Assassin" Tucker. They have the cutest romance that you only get to see from a distance but it's still the cutest! There's even a part where Oscar, who's usually so confident, asks Nova for advice out of the blue and it really throws her off guard. It was also moments like these that revealed the feelings she was starting to have for her team.

All-in-all, this book was the perfect balance of action-packed, emotional, and leaving you on the edge of your seat. I loved reading about the emotional struggles that Nova was feeling as she became torn between the love of the people she was getting to know, and the love of her uncle and the rest of the Anarchists. It just got me really emotional!

Age Rating

11-12+

So this is about the same, content-wise, as the first book of the series. There is flirting and a lot of talk of attraction between Nova and Adrian. There is one kissing scene that goes on for a while. It's kind of graphic but not too bad and a lot of the description is how conflicted Nova's feelings are for Adrian. She really contemplates giving up on the Anarchists for him. The scene ends when she uses her power and makes him pass out.

With language, it's also the same as the first book. The only words said are, "damn", "hell", and "ass". These aren't said very often and are just kind of scattered throughout the book. This series, so far, seems primarily meant for the preteen and teenage audience.
