Summary

Steelheart is gone. The city of Newcago is free at last from his terrible reign. It's all thanks to the efforts of David Charleston and the Reckoners crew. David had always had one goal in his life and now it had been accomplished. Now what did he do? Along with Steelheart's death came a couple discoveries about two of the people closest to David. This made him rethink everything he thought he believed about what he was fighting. With Steelheart's death.... came uncertainty.

This uncertainty is the only reason that David followed Prof, the leader of the Reckoners, to Babylon Restored (formerly New York) to defeat the Epic, Regalia, that ruled that town. Upon arriving, David realizes that it won't be easy to choose between his loyalty to Prof and the rest of the Reckoners, and the woman he loves. Even though that same woman might try to kill him... yet still the choice is difficult.

How will David make these difficult decision all the while trying to bring down ANOTHER one of the most powerful Epics? Throughout this part of the Reckoners' story, David discovers things about all of those close to him. Things he almost wishes he hadn't discovered. Will he be able to accept these people? Or will he be torn between what he's loyal to and what he so desperately wants to believe?

Opinion

Scale of 1-10:

10

I love this entire series SO MUCH! I just got so drawn into this book to the point that it was hard to take my eyes away from it. I felt like I was right there in the story. I felt the ups and downs of David's emotions as he tried to combat the internal struggles that he had. Yet, amidst the struggles of the characters, there is still humor and good feelings that are in this book. The moments that David has with the other characters is amazing.

I think the most you feel during the book is at the end. The ending just makes you sit there like, "There is no way that just happened!" I am just so impressed with Brandon Sanderson's sequel to Steelheart. Usually sequels are a little slower moving than the first book but this wasn't like that at all! I like the fact that even though this book was building and developing the "big-picture" part of the plot-line, there was still certain aspects that kept things interesting and alive.

If you couldn't already tell, I think that everyone should sit down and read this series because if you like stuff about superheroes, then you will love this. Just because all the "heroes" are evil, doesn't mean it's not still enjoyable!

Age Rating

12+

Like the first book, there really wasn't a lot of inappropriate instances. I think the one thing to note is that things were a lot more flirty between David and Megan. She was a love interest in the first book but they didn't flirt and make comments to each other quite as much as they did in this. There was a comment that Megan made when she saw David dancing with another girl. She said that he was dancing with "a bundle of breasts and booty." I found this comment humorous (as it was intended) but I just thought I'd note it in case parents aren't comfortable with that sort of thing. There are a few other comments along those lines a couple of times throughout the book but it's never anything absolutely terrible, in my opinion.

As for language, there was a little bit more of it in this book as well. It was just the words "damn", "hell", and "piss" and they're only said a few times throughout. I feel like the only other thing holding kids back on this book would be the reading level of it. I put ages 12 and up, but in reality I don't really see why a 10 or 11 year old couldn't read it as long as they understood it and they were at that reading level.
