Summary

Bella Swan wasn't sure of a lot of things but the one thing she was sure of was that she was in love with Edward Cullen. She felt as though her life would be incomplete without him in it. It also helped that he wasn't like other high schoolers. He wasn't even like other humans because he wasn't human. Edward and his family, the Cullens, were vampires. They were vampires that preyed on animals instead of humans and they preferred to live in normal human society trying to help rather than harm.

Bella couldn't believe that Edward who was a whole new level of beautiful and intelligent, would ever love her. His love for her was confirmed after he helped save her from death by a hungry vampire who had no compassion for her, the Cullens, or their way of life as vampires. After her rescue, Bella, being the klutz she is, is always being caught by Edward and lifted back up. It never really occurred to her the level of danger she was in when spending time with vampires, no matter how good their intentions were.

When one accident happens and Bella is almost hurt much more badly than imagined because of their different food preferences, Edward makes the decision for him and his family to leave her life for her own good and safety. Bella, believing that he no longer loves her, goes into a stupor and doesn't know how to cope with the love of her life leaving. Nothing, she believes, will replace him.

Throughout this story, Bella makes friends and has to try harder to function like a normal human being. Not only that but she uncovers many more secrets about her town, Forks, and the history it has with vampires and other supernatural creatures. Along with the discoveries come new threats and an old enemy coming to harm her and those she loves dearly.

*Disclaimer*

These books make me very nostalgic so I may be slightly biased.

As a lot of people know, I am a major Twilight fan and I love the love story that comes with supernatural adventures. Out of all the books in the series, I have to say that New Moon is my least favorite. While it still has the excellent Twilight vibe that I absolutely adore, I feel that the way Bella reacted when Edward left was a bit over the top. There is a part of me that understands how she felt he was amazing and there wouldn't be anyone like him. I definitely give her the benefit of the doubt when it comes to her reaction. I just feel that it was just overdone a little bit, especially for a high school relationship, regardless of whether or not the guy was a freaking vampire!

Other than that, I really enjoyed the book because of the lovable characters that Stephenie Meyer just really dove into. We got to know the really endearing Jacob Black (who is by far one of my favorites) and I just loved his happy go lucky nature that he brought into Bella's dark and broody life. He was just so genuine in making her feel happy that it made my heart melt. While I'm very vocal about the fact that I don't think they're a good match, he's still amazing!

One thing that seems underappreciated about this book but I think is worth noting, is Charlie Swan's (Bella's dad) reaction to Edward leaving. I feel that as a father he really stepped up and became genuinely concerned about his daughter's emotions. He knew his daughter and recognized that she doesn't act the way she was unless she was truly miserable. He made a lot of effort to encourage her to get back into social life. He didn't necessarily try to fix everything for her, he just wanted to nudge her in the right direction that would make her happy.

I think that even though this isn't my favorite of all the books, it's still worth reading as a continuation of the story. I promise you that the next two books are way better!

Age Rating

12+

This book is very appropriate in almost all aspects. I honestly believe the only thing holding back younger readers is the reading level. If you believe that your child has a high enough reading level and they'll appreciate a book of this genre, then by all means, they should read it!

Language:

There isn't a lot of language in New Moon and it's just kind of sprinkled here and there. The words that are said are "damn", "hell", and "piss". Language definitely isn't a huge thing in this book.

Sexual Content:

There are a couple of kissing scenes at the beginning of the book and at the end of it. Bella talks about the attraction and feelings she has for both Edward and Jacob. The love triangle between Bella, Edward, and Jacob is one of the main aspects of the Twilight series. There really isn't a whole lot of sexual content in this book.

Violence:

There are a couple of fighting scenes between werewolves. There is also a lot of talk about bloodsucking. Towards the end of the book, Bella gets sick because she witnesses unknowing victims of vampires being led to their death. There are also talks of murders happening and blood being left behind at the crime scenes without a body to find.
