Book 1 of the Percy Jackson series

Summary

Percy Jackson is what you'd call a troubled kid. He has ADHD, dyslexia, and just can't seem to stay out of trouble. And, as usual, he's about to get kicked out of yet another boarding school. Unfortunately, his school record is the absolute LEAST of his problems.

After many bizarre events and attacks against Percy, he discovers that the Greek myths he's learned about are, in fact, real. It turns out that Percy is more linked to them than he ever thought possibleand soon finds himself right in the middle of an almost-war between Zeus and Poseidon (Percy's father). Zeus believes that it was Percy who took his all-powerful lightning bolt at the command of Poseidon. That seems highly unlikely to Percy, though, given the fact that up until the previous week, he didn't know the bolt existed or that his father was THE GOD OF THE SEA!

With many twists and turns, Percy and his friends travel across the country, under the command of the Oracle, to make sure a full-on war doesn't break out. They also must figure out who it was that stole the bolt. In fact, the thief could be right under their noses.

Opinion

Scale of 1-10:

10

Oh this book makes me feel so happy! I read these when I was younger and I still love them to this day! They give such warm feelings and bring me into a familiar world of gods and monsters that I think of as a second home at this point. I may seem slightly bias but I can honestly say that this is an EXCELLENT book. I love the humor that Rick Riordan has and how he portrays it in his characters.

Rereading this after reading all of this series and Heroes of Olympus, it's so amazing to return to where it all started. Riordan has created a whole universe and this was the book that started ALL of it! I loved reliving this story so much and I feel that I really grew up and aged with Percy throughout the years. I'm definitely excited to reread all of the books straight through and watch him and his friends grow up.

This is also just such a good-humored book! There are some jokes that are subtle and implied (which are hilarious) but then there are some that are just so blatantly there that I can't help but chuckle at them. I feel that the humor through all the characters was a huge thing that made me always love them. I definitely fell BACK in love with these characters!

This is for sure a MUST-READ! I own almost all of the mythological books Riordan has published and I regret NOTHING! I thoroughly suggest that you read all the way through this series and the next series, Heroes of Olympus.

Age Rating

11+

I started reading this series when I was slightly younger because I was abnormally into reading. I put 11+, though, because the average kid at this age would completely appreciate this book. If your child has a high reading level and they are really into reading, then this would be appropriate. Honestly, I still love this series as I'm older.

Language:

None

Sexual Content:

Talks of dating. The gods have MANY illegitimate children with mortals. Many of those children were conceived when a god was being unfaithful to their spouse. This type of thing isn't overly focused on, but still mentioned.

Violence:

There are no graphic descriptions of violence but there are fight scenes where people are maimed and Percy cuts off a monster's head. The characters are attacked very often by monsters and some gods. Violence isn't really something to worry about in this book.
