Book 2 of the Ready Player One series

Note: This may contain spoilers to previous books in the series

Summary

It's a whole new world for Wade Watts (aka Parzival) and his group of friends. They've won Halliday's Contest and now are the sole owners of GSS, the company that created the OASIS, an immersive game from which the majority of the population escapes. Little do these new owners know, is that Halliday left them another quest to complete. A quest that would impact all of their lives in various ways.

This quest was discovered after Wade discovered a new way to go into the OASIS. A way that would change the world and everyone in it. The only question is whether or not the change is good or bad. That will soon be determined by this group of owners. Of course, they all have varying views on what's right and wrong.

How will this new quest affect Wade and his team? Will it bring them together, or tear them apart?

Opinion

Scale of 1-10:

Alright... let's talk. Never, in my year of doing this blog, have I given such a low score. Maybe once but it was a while ago. It's partly because of the expectations I had of this book, and partly because it just genuinely wasn't enjoyable for me. There are so many reasons so I'm going to address them (rant) here. Here we go!

Let's start with Wade's character. What once was a witty, intelligent, not-give-a-crap-what-you-think character, has now turned into a boring, un-relatable, and kind of preachy to be honest. Also, I feel that the author is COMPLETELY contradicting Wade's already established character. It is made very clear that Wade is an immature young man who struggles with accepting others' emotions. Then he apparently has opinions and views that many people would view as mature and understanding of other people's lifestyles. How would a person who has already been confirmed to be, as I said before, immature, be this way? STICK TO AN ESTABLISHED CHARACTER. Don't get me wrong, if there is growth in the character over time, then I don't mind it, but when it's like one page he's a certain way, and then the next page he's already contradicting himself, it doesn't make sense to me. It really doesn't help that the author made the side characters twenty times more interesting than Wade... I would've rather heard the story from one of their POVs.

Now let's talk about the dialogue and various comments made. Now I don't mind a little bit of corny dialogue here and there, but this wasn't easily overlooked in this one. There were so many of what seemed like forced comments about things like race and sexuality. These comments, in my opinion, didn't really help the story flow. I never mind comments every now and then but every little thing came back to stuff like this. Especially at the beginning of the book, there was always some way something was tied to sex. There were so many references that I just sat there like, "How could he make THAT about sex?" There was also a comment about how Tolkien's story of Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit had all white good guys and then all the bad guys had dark skin. I feel that was an unnecessary comment ONLY BECAUSE they then proceeded to have an entire couple of chapters DEDICATED to Lord of the Rings.... so I'm just sitting here confused now.

Also, there were a couple of times in the story-line that was just not enjoyable to read. There's a scene where I really felt that he research a whole bunch about a certain fandom or certain person and then copied and pasted that information into his book. It just didn't feel personable like the first book did. And on top of it, there were so many scenes where I felt my eyes kind of glaze over and all I could think of is "Okay this scene needs to be over now." With Ready Player One, I was intensely focused on that story the entire time and loved every minute of it.

Now there were moments that I enjoyed some of the references to various fandoms or characters and a couple of scenes where I thought this book could be salvageable but in the end, it was a disappointment. I mean the ending also wasn't the best. It kind of left me unsettled. I didn't know if it was a good ending or not so I settled on that it's not a good ending... ugh I had such hopes for this book.

Age Rating

15+

There were so many unnecessary sex references and a lot of extra cursing. Not many people will fully enjoy the book when they're younger than this, in my opinion.

Language:

Cursing was very frequent in this book and the words used were, "hell", "ass", "piss", "sh*t", and "f**k".

Sexual Content:

At the beginning of the book, Wade makes multiple comments about his sex habits both virtual and with his girlfriend when they were together. Wade talks about having intercourse in the OASIS as a different gender and tried all sorts of different kinds of intercourse. This is referenced in the book a couple more times after the initial mention of it. Other than that, there are jokes and references throughout. Both homosexual and heterosexual relationships are represented in this story.

Violence:

There really isn't a lot of violence except inside the videogame. There are no descriptions of blood. There is a part when someone gets shot in real life but there's no graphic description.
