Summary
Spensa lives in a world where being a pilot is the highest honor anyone could ever have. Their planet, Detritus, has been under attack by the fearsome Krell for decades. They've been on the planet for 80 years so... pretty much since then. Years ago, Spensa's father was a talented, popular pilot for the government, the DDF. That is, until he fled like a coward from a fight.
Now Spensa has to prove that she's not like her father. She's not a coward. It was difficult to become a pilot and now her chances were even smaller. As she goes through the struggles of living in her father's shadow and trying to live her dream, she discovers a cave that holds something that may help her achieve all of her goals.
For most of her life Spensa lived in her father's shadow. She may now have a chance to break out of it.

Wow…. just... WOW! This was such an amazing book. I honestly have absolutely no complaints about it. The way Brandon Sanderson immerses people in his stories absolutely blows my mind. I've read almost all of Brandon Sanderson's books and almost all of them are this good. Honestly, this book took me for a whirlwind of emotions. I was feeling exactly what the main character was feeling. The way he built up even the side characters is just so marvelous! I honestly don't know how much I can hype this book up more.

So this book really isn't all that inappropriate. There's death in this book and the main character struggles with the death of friends and you really read about her internal pain and struggles. Language wise the only words that are used are "hell", "damn", and "bastard". Even with these words, cursing is definitely not common in this book.
There also isn't a lot of romance in this book either. The main character says that one of the other characters is attractive and there is a side character that has a girlfriend and they show small amounts of affection in public but that's about it. This is definitely not an older young adult book, and in my opinion, given the reading level and the topics such as death it covers, it is a good teen book. Younger kids can read if parents feel that they have a high enough reading level because honestly that would be the only thing stopping younger kids.
