The Mystery of the Lost Causes of Bleak Creek!

Summary

Written by the creators of the show Good Mythical Morning, Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal, The Lost Causes of Bleak Creek is a mystery about a backwards small town in 1992. This town may have smiling faces and a love of pork barbeque, but that's all just a façade... this town has a dark side to it. What many high schoolers and adults believe are just freak accidents that led to the deaths of students at the local Whitewood Reformatory school, aren't actually accidents at all. Rex McClendon and Leif Nelson learn this the hard way when their best friend, Alicia, is taken to the reformatory school for "unruly" behavior.

The mysteries surrounding the town's secrets are what brought Janine, a NYU graduate in film making, to her mother's hometown in the first place. Well... it wasn't THAT secret that originally brought her there. It was the fact that many people in the town had an oddly high amount of kidney stones throughout their lives. While Janine may have gone for the kidney stones, she stayed for the intense secrets that were affecting this town and even her family.

Rex, Leif, and Janine team up to figure out what exactly is going on in the Whitewood Reform school and maybe try to get Alicia out of their. What they find at that school though, completely changes what they original thought about the seemingly kind town of Bleak Creek.

Opinion

Scale of 1-10:

8.5

I would just like to say that I am a HUGE fan of Rhett and Link. My whole family loves watching their show and we all like to watch it almost every day! When I heard they had a mystery book, my first thought was to buy it and I definitely don't regret it. While it's not a writing masterpiece, it's still such an amazing story and it definitely kept me guessing as to what the heck was happening in this weird town. These authors aren't full-time authors so I don't expect a totally fabulous written book and my hopes weren't too high. I'm happy to say that despite this, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the humor they included in it.

The characters were another thing I enjoyed about the book. The authors did a good job of portraying the minds of two teenage boys and it was absolutely hilarious. At one point in the book, the boys are playing a game where they just threw a Nerf basketball at each other's private areas. The nonchalant way it's brought into the story was hilarious because it honestly sounds like something two bored teenage boys would do when hanging out.

This was just such a good book and I would recommend it for people who like creepy mystery books. It's definitely a good eerie-read!

So this book, I believe, is meant for late preteens and teens but it's still really enjoyable for an older audience. There is a very creepy aspect to it that is really cool and eerie. There isn't really a lot of romance in the book except the fact that both boys mention (mostly in their inner thoughts) that they had recently developed a crush on their friend Alicia. None of them act on it though. One comment made from Rex's POV is that he notices Alicia's lips and thinks about what it would be like to kiss her. Janine's character was in a previous relationship that didn't end well. There are also some small brief jokes made but they will most likely go over younger readers' heads. Other than that stuff, there almost isn't anything romantic or sexual in the book.

When it comes to language in the book, it's not too bad at all. The cursing is just kind of littered throughout the book. The includes the words like "F**k", "hell", "damn", "bastard", and 'sh**". These words aren't said frequently through the book but they are there.

As I mentioned, there are some creepy elements to the book. There's a cult that's in the story and they make sacrifices every few years. While nothing gets graphic, it's still a little disturbing.
