Writer's picture: CatNipCatNip

The Reckoners series: Book 1

Summary

Revenge is what drives David Charleston. Nothing but revenge for ten years since he was eight. He wanted to kill the undefeatable Epic known as Steelheart. There is nothing that is going to stop him from achieving his goal, and there's only one group he can turn to.... the shadowy group known as the Reckoners.

Epics are the people who are able to harness amazing powers since the arrival of the mysterious, red star, Calamity. There are so many people with these abilities, yet none of them are heroes. None of them show kindness... or mercy. When David was eight years old, his father was killed by the powerful Epic, Steelheart, and that fact has festered in David's heart for a decade. And now he had a chance to accomplish his goal.

Will David get to kill his sworn enemy with the help of the Reckoners? Will he get to see the indestructible Steelheart bleed?

Opinion

Scale of 1-10:

10

Obviously since this is a Brandon Sanderson book, I absolutely LOVE it! I don't think that there will ever be a book by this author, that I rate lower than an eight. All of his books that I've read are just so great that sometimes I don't know how I survived without his books! This book is no exception at all. It has such a cool take on the "super hero" genre and I just loved it. The humor in the book is definitely in sync with Brandon Sanderson's other books. It's a little sarcastic and a little random and it's the perfect blend!

The characters that are in this book are well-developed and you just love some of them to the point where you start to actually worry if they're going to be alright throughout the story! I also really enjoy some of the comments that David makes in his mind. It reminds me of how I correct myself in my head before I say things out loud. The thing that I think I enjoy most about this author's writing is that he can make such diverse personalities in his characters. While it's a mark of a good author that they can make their character's so different, I always enjoy seeing it. There are some books that I've read and the characters just all have very similar qualities. Those qualities are usually a reflection of the author and they just don't really diversify the personalities.

Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed this story, the action, and the emotions that were in this book. For reading a book the second time, it still managed to keep my interest!

Age Rating

11-12+

This is one of Brandon Sanderson's series that are meant for preteens. This author does such a good job of making books that are perfect for preteens and adults alike. There are some comments made in the book that are brief jokes and they'll just go over younger readers' heads. Other than that there is no sexual material. There's definitely flirting between David and one of the other primary characters, Megan. David had a crush on her right when he saw her and he describes how she looks and how attractive he finds her. Other than that, this is a really appropriate book.

When it comes to language, the only two words said a couple times are "damn" and "hell". Like I said, this is a very appropriate book!
