Summary

Almost a whole year has passed since Percy Jackson saved the world from a war between the gods. No big deal or anything. Now he's almost done with the school year at his new school and everything's gone smoothly so far. Just when he started to get comfortable is when things start to go horribly wrong. During a pretty unusual game of dodgeball, Percy and his six-foot-tall friend Tyson run into a little trouble with giants. Giants who have coincidentally made it their mission to kill Percy. With Tyson and, surprisingly, Annabeth's (who's been traveling the whole year) help, they all make it out alive. Now the three of them must go to Camp Half-Blood to see what problems await them there. According to Annabeth, there are quite a few...

The borders that protect the camp have been weakened greatly due to a poison infecting the magical tree. Who poisoned it, no one knows. On top of all this troubling news, Percy discovers new family secrets about his father and an unexpected relative. Things couldn't get worse. But, if we've learned anything, it probably will.

How will Percy save the camp? What other secrets will he uncover while he's at it? Welcome to Percy Jackson's second year inside Greek mythology itself.

Age Rating

Scale of 1-10:

9

Ok, so the reason I didn't give this the same score I gave the first one (which was a 10) because I feel the beginning of it didn't grip me as well as the beginning of the first book. Whether that was because I was distracted when reading it, I don't know, but all I know is that I loved the rest of it.

There were so many funny comments from Percy and I just have always fallen in love with the humor that Rick Riordan brings to his books. I love the friendships that he develops with each of the characters. He also, in my opinion, makes the feelings that Percy feels towards some characters, really realistic coming from a young teenage boy's mind. Riordan gives Percy flaws that make him that much more relatable and it's really cool to see that kind of thing in books.

I also really liked the story itself. While there were a couple of times I felt like everything that went wrong happened, and that can be annoying at times. Most of the time, though, the author wrote it in a humorous and exciting way that made you keep wanting to read more!

Age Rating

11+

This book is very appropriate for younger readers and if your child has a higher reading level and they're younger than this age, they will fully appreciate this book. I mainly based this rating on the reading level of the book. It's definitely geared towards the preteen audience.

Language:

One use of the word "damn" and that's it.

Sexual Content:

As with the previous book, it's just mostly a lot of references to how the gods have illegitimate children with mortals. There isn't anything else having to do with sexual content in this book.

Violence:

There are many fighting and action scenes but blood and gore aren't ever graphically described. There are times when the author says where blood is located on a person after an injury but that's about as far as he goes graphically.
