Summary
Milly, Aubrey, and Jonah Story are what some would call estranged family. Their respective parents never spoke to each other, despite the fact they were siblings. Honestly, most of what the three kids hear about their family is odd and doesn't really give any information. Ever since their grandmother made a point to cut all contact between her and her children, the three cousins had never met their mysterious and wealthy grandmother. This summer, that all changed.
After getting a cryptic letter from their grandmother, Mildred, to come and work at her resort island, the three cousins set off to the place where their parents grew up. A place that they'd only heard short, vague stories about. A place where their parents did something so unforgivable that their grandmother felt the need to disinherit them. The web of lies surrounding this place was enough to make the cousins uneasy about going but they had no choice. Their parents were bound and determined to somehow get back in Mildred's good graces and to be re-inherited.
So, entering the island, the three cousins faced a whole new look on their family. They, through the stories they began hearing, saw whole new sides of their parent's history and a whole new glimpse into why Mildred wanted nothing to do with them. The only thing is... there are so many lies that no one can even tell what's actually the truth, or just another family lie they were being told. Will the three of them be able to figure out what when wrong in their messed-up family? Do they want to even find out?

Alright, this was a PHENOMENAL book! I loved it so much it and I honestly got invested in it after like two chapters. The characters were so lovable and the humor she brought out in these characters was just perfect in my opinion. While I really liked the twist ending and I definitely didn't see it coming, I didn't get that like stomach drop moment that I expected. Whether that was just due to my mood when reading it or not, I don't know but that's how I feel.
Other than that, though, Karen McManus definitely kept my interest throughout the whole thing. The individual secrets that were revealed about the characters were so cool and made me love them all so much more! I especially liked Jonah who was super snarky and sarcastic. The way he and Milly bounced off one another in dialogue absolutely killed me!
The flashbacks that were included in the story were an amazing touch, in my opinion. It definitely got my mind working on how they were all tied into the story and I found that part really enjoyable. We got to see a whole new side of the mystery that really added to it is a great way!
Finally, I really loved how the characters were all introduced. I feel that the way the author introduced them was so personalized to each character's personality and really set the tone for each of them in a way that I don't often see in books. I mean I probably do, but this was the first time I really noticed it.
Okay, so all I have left to say is that if you're into mysteries then this is the book you need to read!
Age Rating
13-14+
There is the frequent language throughout and a few sexual references but there's nothing graphic.
Language:
Cursing is pretty frequent in this book and is definitely notable. The words "sh**", "d**k", "ass", "fu**", "bi***", "bastard", and "hell" are repeated multiple times throughout the whole book.
Sexual Content:
There's really nothing else except references to sex. Sex is also implied in one of the flashbacks but that's about it. There's also a couple of kissing scenes but they never go past kissing. There's also flirty references but, again, never goes past a certain point. All-in-all, the sexual content was relatively mild.
Violence:
There's a couple of characters that get injured. There are also people that get murdered in the story and it's a pretty big part of the plot. Other than that though, violence is kept to a minimum.
