Summary
Living in New York, Rebecca "Becky" Bloomwood lives her life buying everything she wants without any troubles. Well, except for one. Because of her expensive lifestyle, Becky deals with a crushing amount of debt that will soon overcome her entire life if she doesn't do something about it. But what exactly can be done? She can't just stop buying things! Who in their right mind would do that?
She decides to apply for a new job in fashion but because of fateful decisions and turns, she ends up working for a financial magazine called Successful Savings who's edited by a man named Luke Brandon. Luke, for some unknown reason, seems to see some potential in this young journalist and helps her become successful in financial journalism. All the while this is happening, Becky employs the help of her friend Suze and tries to evade the terrifying man from the bank, Derek Smeath, who wants to have a "talk" with her about her insane amount of debt. That can't end well.
Through twists and turns, Becky finds herself growing closer to Luke and her job at Successful Savings. They both encourage each other in ways they never could imagine and they both start to become better people. Will it be enough to get Becky on the right financial track? How will she get out of the web of lies she's woven about her spending problem?

Alright... so first I'm going to start this review from a point of view of a person who has never read the book. This was an adorable and lighthearted movie that honestly gives you so many laughs. The cast is so amazing and picking Isla Fisher to play Becky Bloomwood was an excellent choice! The characters were honestly so lovable and by the end of it, I grew really attached to them and adored them.
There were only a couple of times that it was a little overdone and some of the lies that Becky told were so outrageous that there is no way someone would believe that was a plausible lie. There were times that I know for a FACT that she could've come up with something better so it's really irritating when she comes up with all the crappy lies!
Now for the point of view of a person who's read the book. WHAT THE HECK! The book was an AMAZING STORY with SO MUCH POTENTIAL for a movie!!!! Why in the name of God and all that is holy, did they do an almost COMPLETELY different story than the one from the book?! I mean, they could've at least made the characters British and have the setting be in London. But NOOO! They have to change the entire country where the store took place! As I was watching this, I enjoyed it but the entire time I was really wishing that I could see the original story take place before my eyes.
I'm not completely dissing this movie because I grew up watching it. I think it's really funny and they do a good job of encapsulating Becky Bloomwood with Isla Fisher. One thing that bothered me, though, was how they changed Luke Brandon's character. He didn't own his own business in this movie! He was only an EDITOR! I feel that really demeans the awesomeness of his character. One thing in the book was how differently he behaved around Becky. He was more upbeat when he was with her and that's how readers could see how good she was for him. In the movie, they didn't really show a major change in his personality when he was around her vs how he was around other people. I feel that it took something away from their romance.
Finally, my last complaint. I feel like the book really revolved around Becky and not so much her romance with Luke Brandon, though that was a big part of it. I think the movie focused more on her romantic journey with him than her personal struggle with money. Don't get me wrong, I love their story, but I just think that the book had the right idea with how it handled their relationship. Their relationship is a little more of a focus point in later books.
Rant over! I'm not saying that you won't enjoy this movie but don't expect when you go into it to see an amazing adaption of the beloved book. If you're in the mood for a laugh, this is still a good movie to watch!
Age Rating
Official Rating:
PG
My Rating:
10+
Despite the book having more PG-13 material, they didn't really include a whole lot of the language and sexual dialogue that the book did.
Language:
The words "ass", "b**ch", and "hell" are repeated a few times throughout the movie.
Sexual Content:
There is one kissing scene throughout the movie and there's really not a lot of discussion about sex.
Violence:
Honestly the only violence there is in the movie is when women are fighting over designer clothes at a sample sale. There's really not any violence in this movie.
