Thoughts

Scale of 1-10:

8.5

As you could probably tell, I struggled writing a summary for this play because I'm not really sure how to go about it. The play, in my opinion, is pretty self-explanatory in itself.

I am not a musical person so that's why I didn't feel that I could give these full points. There were also some songs that felt really drawn out to me. There weren't many, so that's why I didn't take away a whole point. All I got to say is that if you're really just not into musicals at all, then you may not like this. If you're like me, and you give certain ones a chance, then you will most likely really enjoy this.

The music was just really good, in my opinion. There were some songs that just stuck in my head and I can probably sing them word for word as they're playing! I've watched Hamilton multiple times now and I was told by a family member that you can really grasp the full story if you put on the closed captions. Let me tell you, that doing that makes such a difference! I can really feel the whole story when I can know the exact words the characters are singing.

I really like that not all of the songs sound like they belong in a really old Disney movie as some musicals have. There were songs with rapping and other modern types of music that were honestly just written in such an appealing way. Lin Manuel-Miranda is such an artist and I really hope he keeps making music!

While musicals can be hard for me to watch at times, this one isn't one that I dread watching! I love the cast and I fell in love with the characters. I really hope you do too!

Age Rating

Official Rating:

PG-13

My Rating:

12-13+

There wasn't really a lot of inappropriate material in this play but there were references and some language throughout.

Language:

The words that are said throughout the play are "damn", "sh**", "ass", and "bastard". These words aren't said all the time in the play but enough times to be worthy of note. There is also a part where the F word is almost said but I don't think you can really tell.

Sexual Content:

It is mentioned multiple times in the play that Hamilton is the son of a whore. There is a part in the play where Hamilton has an affair with another woman. There are conversations (or songs) about how he couldn't help himself and how he needs to hide it from his wife. There is also talk about the character Aaron Burr having a physical relationship with a married woman while her husband fights for the British army. Other than those things, there are mainly just minor jokes and references.

Violence:

Obviously, since this is a "live" performance, there is no blood being shown during the more intense scenes. There are parts where men are dueling one another and they have their guns out. It's obvious when one of them gets shot by their acting, but no blood or gore is shown.
