Alrighty then! Let's talk about a cult classic movie, Dirty Dancing. I actually just watched this for the first time a few days ago and I am shocked that I haven't seen that movie before! I hope that if you haven't see it, then this article will shed light on the movie and help you decide whether or not it's worth watching. Enjoy!
What is it About?
Back in 1963, Frances "Baby" Houseman goes up with her family to a summer resort. She's fully prepared for it to be a boring summer where preppy boys flirt with her in hopes to pique her interest. Her whole mindset changes, though, when she meets Johnny Castle, a dance instructor for visitors at the resort.
Due to unexpected circumstances, Baby becomes Johnny's pupil so that she can learn a dance routine that's supposed to be performed in only a couple weeks. So for the duration of that time, Johnny teaches her everything he can and eventually, comes to become increasingly closer to her. And she to him. The more they learn together, the more they can't deny the feelings for each other even though she's the doctor of a doctor and he's a kid from the streets that just so happens to knows how to dance.
Will the unlikely couple be able to make it? What other obstacles stand in their way?
My Thoughts
Well I WAS NOT prepared for the emotional toll this movie took from me. I thought, "Oh this is going to be such an easy-breezy movie that won't affect me too much." Nope! That is not at all what it was. This movie may not have been easy breezy but I ABSOLUTELY LOVED a the story and characters that were in this movie. The character development that happened with Baby Houseman as she continued to get to know Johnny. There were even times when I saw changes in him too and those were very endearing [insert heart eyes emoji]
I will admit that there were a couple of corny part and dialogue but there was a small part of me that wanted those things to be normal things to say! Like the famous line "Nobody puts Baby in a corner." I about died at how corny that line was but at the same time I was all excited because it was such a triumphant and smooth moment for Johnny and Baby's reaction to that line was equally adorable!
Ultimately, while this may seem like one of those cheesy romantic movies and there are parts that prove it is, it is just such an emotion-filled movie that has some really amazing and in-depth characters. By the end of it, I just couldn't help loving the people that the characters became.
If you can't tell, I become very attached to fictional characters and it's becoming a true problem...
Age Rating
14+
The only things in this movie that are inappropriate are some prolonged make-out scenes, and some language throughout the movie.
Language
The language in this movie are words like "sh**", "ass", and "damn". These things are said throughout the movie and said by many of the characters.
Sexual Content
There is one scene in particular that heavily implies that the two main characters had sex. No nudity is shown but Baby is shown with her top off but bra still on. After this scene, Johnny and Baby are shown in bad together and there is some kissing throughout the rest of the movie.
Violence
There is one fist-fight scene but it's nothing too bad. There is also a part where the character, Penny, had a botched abortion and you can see that she is in an insane amount of pain. Another character described that she had been screaming during the whole operation and he couldn't get to her. I don't know if you'll feel the same, but this whole thing made me sick to my stomach. as a woman, thinking about the pain that Penny was going through.
