Hello all! While reading is my favorite hobby and the one that occupies most of my time, I also enjoy watching A LOT of TV, play A LOT of video games, etc. Every now and then, I'll be publishing articles the highlight some of these different hobbies. One of the segments I'll be doing is Movie Time. It won't be just about movies, though, I'll also be reviewing different TV shows as well. For my first Movie Time, I'll be discussing the amazing Umbrella Academy.
Notes:
-This review and age rating is only for the first season of show
-Season two of this show is released on July 31, 2020
What is it about?
One day in 1989, there were 43 kids who were born from mothers who weren't pregnant the day before. An eccentric millionaire, Sir Reginald Hargreeves, went around the world to find and adopt these kids for his own reasons. He only got seven of the children.
With the seven children, Hargreeves founded what he called thee Umbrella Academy. In this academy his adopted children learned about their mysterious powers that they were gifted with. When the kids became teenagers, Hargreeves sent them out on missions and they quickly became a group of popular superheroes. They lived in a life of fame and heroism.
Well into their teenage years, events caused the family to fracture beyond repair and they all split up.... that is until they had to go to their father's funeral many years later.
The six surviving kids meet up at the mansion they grew up in to attend their "father's" funeral. They were quick to find out that many of the, had nothing good to say about the man that turned them into heroes. Despite their reluctance, they start to believe that he was killed under mysterious circumstances, and they begin to investigate.
They have this somewhat common goal, but they realize that in their separation, they have developed very contrasting personalities and adult lives, from still being famous, to being a drug addict to escape from their powers.
Will the family be able to solve their father's death and stop, what they recently discovered was bound to happen, the apocalypse? How will they get past their striking differences as people?
My Thoughts
I think that if I had to rate this show on a scale of 1-10 based on the first season, then I would give it an 8. The story itself was super intriguing and I just found myself just kind of drawn into it. I mean, it isn't like the best show in the world, but I am definitely looking forward to the second season just because of the INSANE cliffhanger that the first season left us all on!
There were also some characters that I absolutely fell in love with! If you decide to watch it then be on the lookout for the character Klaus because he is just hilarious, despite being the one in the show with the most struggles and trauma. Then there's Five, who is pretty darn cool as well.
The reason that I just started re-watching this first season is because Netflix FINALLY announced the released date of the second season! I have been waiting so patiently for them to release it. I follow the show on Instagram and II saw when they finished filming so I was like, "Oh ok, they must be releasing it here soon." NOPE! They were not releasing it until the next entire year! But it's okay... I've come to terms with it and now that they've announced the release date, I've forgiven Netflix :-)
Age Rating
Official Age Rating:
TV-14
My Age Rating:
13+
I agree that this is an accurate age rating for this show. I think that kids 13 and up could watch this show so far into the series. Maybe even 12+ but that's obviously up to the parent how comfortable they feel with what their children watch. There is some sexual content but not a lot. There is some language as well. Violence is really evident in this storyline too.
Language:
There is cursing throughout the whole first season. Words like "damn", "hell", and "shit" are said. It's not ever other word but it's still occasional.
Sexual Content:
There are multiple romances in this first season. There's one between two of the seven members of the Umbrella Academy, Luther and Allison. There is also a small romance that you don't see much of between Klaus and a man from the past (it's a long story how Klaus got into the past). Vanya, another of the members, also has a romantic relationship with a side character. There are a few references and jokes about sexual stuff but all in all, there's nothing accept a few kissing scenes.
Violence:
Violence is VERY evident in this first season of The Umbrella Academy. There are many fighting scenes that show a lot of blood and combat. The fighting varies from stabbing to shooting to cutting. Let's just say it's a lot. I don't feel that it's like The Walking Dead type of bad, but it's still somewhat graphic.
